    Enzymes and global warming

Climate change is an increasingly serious problem, which Novozymes’ technology can help to solve. Calculations show that emissions of greenhouse gases such as CO2 can be substantially reduced with the help of enzymes.

A rough estimate shows that the enzymes that Novozymes sells each year already reduce total emissions of greenhouse gases by around 14 million tons, equivalent to the emissions from 3.5 million cars. The potential for reducing the total emissions of greenhouse gases by means of enzymes is considerably greater.

These results have been obtained by comparing emissions of greenhouse gases from different production methods for the manufacture of products like bread and edible oils with and without enzymes. We have looked at the impact on the environment at every stage of a product’s lifecycle, and found that enzyme technology is generally an environmentally friendly alternative to other technologies.

Energy and climate strategy with a broader scope
Global warming means that companies will increasingly need to look at their business from the point of view of greenhouse gas emissions.

Novozymes has chosen to look at the big picture in its energy and climate strategy. We consider both overall community aspects and our relationships with customers and suppliers.

Novozymes’ ambition is to bring modern biotechnology into play and, together with our customers, help to provide part of the solution to the climate change problem. It is also important to work with suppliers on using energy as efficiently as possible in the production of both our products and theirs.

New technology to enable use of plant waste

Cars that run on fuel produced from biomass are a realistic possibility within the foreseeable future.
